I am really trying to encourage these older two kids to "act" like older kids. Someone around here needs to be able to get themselves in and out of the shower, get themselves dressed, be responsible for their own coat and gloves, even be able to make a few things to feed the rest of them when our new baby comes. Sometimes it feels like I have four 2 year olds and that just sucks. So with all the responsibilities I've been piling on them it seemed only right to treat them to things that are just for big kids. I got tickets for the three of us to the Circus at UVU this week but I didn't tell them about it until they got in the car. This was their reaction:
I've never been to the Circus in my entire life and so it was totally fun for me too. It was at 4 on a Wednesday so the crowd was pretty small.
We were super close to the action and the show was really well done and entertaining.

Except these tight rope walkers were giving me serious anxiety. They kept "almost" falling which was killing me.
It was probably part of the act but that part was less than enjoyable for me.

Although, no matter how entertaining the show was it pales in comparison to whatever was being sold up and down the aisle at any given moment for Lottie. Jack could handle it pretty well but poor Lottie almost fell apart each time someone walked by selling cotton candy, or snow cones, or glow swords. I made them wait until intermission when we had a talk about the inflation of costs at things like this. I had brought $20 cash and that's it. I told them I strongly suggested an elephant ride and cotton candy for each of them (which seems crazy cool to me) but they both insisted on having some "thing" to take home. The glow swords they wanted were $15.00 A PIECE so they settled on these little glow wand things that were $8.00.
I just can't think about how we could have bought the same thing at the dollar store and been able to get an elephant ride or I'll go crazy..

They loved the Circus and have been thanking me over and over again ever since for taking them. I just wish they would help me out a little more
so I would feel inclined to do more fun things for them.

I've been to the circus once when I was a kid and never again. I find them a bit creepy - not sure why. Good for you for taking them.
One thing I am grateful for is how "big" my girls are. They do most everything themselves, which I just love. Of course I only have 3 and maybe it was because they were 6 and 4 before Aiden came around but I absolutely love that I really only have one kid to get ready. :) Your day will come and then you will wonder what happened to all your little people.
I used to get really annoyed with Zak not doing things for himself and helping out at that age. I expected/needed him to be more independent since he was the oldest. Sean is 5 and I still brush his teeth and help him with everything because he is the baby. Sometimes I feel guilty about the completely different expectations I have had with them and how different I have treated them. Madeline just got lost somewhere in the middle.
