New pet

The other day when John was doing some yard work he found this guy.
Jack was in love
Lottie almost broke his little arms
Then, after about 3 hours, Jack put him down to go #1 behind the shed and the little guy hopped off to his sweet freedom.
Now we see that we must get our kids a pet but what can we get that is really low maintenance, can be held and touched and doesn't cost a fortune to keep up. Any suggestions?

I'm just impressed that the toad lived after being a child's pet for 3 whole hours! My boys decided to keep a caterpillar last summer (maybe two summers ago) and it didn't make it 10 minutes without getting squished. No pets for us for a while!

I was so happy to get your comment today - I have been following your blog for a while and just LOVE it!

You guys sound like "Red Necks" - frogs for pets and peeing behind sheds - bleck!

I would love any suggestions for a pet. My poor little kids have resorted to filling bags with water and drawing faces on them and naming them. How sad! And a little weird.

We had a cockroach in the bathroom the other day. The girls named him "Spider". I do not suggest that as a pet. Our little "pet" was promptly washed down the drain.

We really so sound like red necks don't we.. We've tried to get Jack to stop peeing outside but he just loves it. John says he doesn't blame him because he would pee outside too if he could. Oh well. At least he knows #2 are ONLY for the potty.

This will be long. You might think I'm crazy, but I think a cat is the lowest cost, easiest to maintain, and funnest pet you can get. They keep to themselves a lot, but are also playful. The key for us was getting a kitten. At 6 weeks, she only took one day to box train. Then we were able to raise her up to fit into our routine and lifestyle. She is cheap to maintain (just food and litter) and a litter box is a lot easier to keep clean than a cage or aquarium. The only one time costs were fixing and shots, and those can total less than $100. (We also had ours declawed in the front, so that was a little extra, of course, but worth it.) Since she's an inside cat, we don't have to worry about worm pills and everything stays cleaner since she doens't track anythin. We got a short haired one, so there isn't much shedding. She requires a lot less attention than a dog and doesn't mind being alone when we've been gone on vacation (or when I was in the hospital with Craig) and even handled the 1000 mile move to Arizona very well, for never having gone outside much. She occupies Craig a lot of the time, we got her for free (can't beat that), and she enjoys spending time with us. Yep, a cat was the best pet choice we ever made.
