About Jack

Today I found out Jack has an ear infection. I also found out that Jack is absolutely no fun when he has an ear infection. It's been pretty much nonstop crying and whining over here for the last several days. I thought it might help me to be patient while we ride this out to make a list like I did with Lottie the other day.

* I love that Jack is as smart as can be and loves to learn. We have school time every morning and I am having a hard time keeping up with what he wants to learn. So far he can recongize and write all his letters and numbers. What now--do I really teach my barely three year old how to read and how do you even go about teaching someone how to read???
* I love that he can sing
* I love how he loves his friends and how he refers to Lottie as his "best friend"
* I loves how he reminds me so much of his dad because I really love his dad.

* I hate hate hate hate hate his whining

I'd recommend "Alpha-Phonics" or "How to teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons" You can research them on the web to see what people have to say about them. Different kids respond better to different methods. You might even be able to check them out from the library first and try a few lessons from each and see which he likes better. You can spend just a few minutes each day so it isn't overwhelming. If he's ready, then go for it! I have a nephew that has been reading since he was 2.5 so some kids really are ready that young. What a cutie! And the whining will pass...eventually. :-)

Wow - what a smartie! And what a great problem to have :-) I read at 3 also, and I devoured books as a kid. Sorry to hear about the ear infection - those things stink. Poor Jack!

I'm sorry Jack is sick. Kids are really whiny with ear aches. Hey You know you can call me if you want ideas for what to teach jack seeing as how teaching 4 year olds is my profession. Some simple things to begin with are rhyming words. Make up silly Rhymes or talk about words that rhyme. and also letter sounds. Play games like I'm going on a trip and I'm going to take things that start with "mmm" and then name things that start with the M sound like marshmallows. I'm going to stop there because I've got oodles and I know that's probably not what you wanted from this post. I love how much you love your kids. You're going to be a great mom of three. Just remember that when you are about to explode from all the whining.

I'd say that you could start teaching him letter sounds. And rhyming. MandyW has some great ideas. I wouldn't push a 3 year old to read unless he really wanted to.

I think whining is the worst sound in the world. Hang in there.

Zak taught himself to read at that age. All I did was teach him the sounds that each letter makes and he figured it all out on his own. That is great that Jack can already write! I bet he would pick up piano really quick (Zak did). Maybe you should get him a keyboard for Christmas. Hope he gets better soon; nothing worse than a cranky toddler.

I lived in Wendover and occasionaly check your blog through Danica's..just to see how great you and alie are doing. My suggestion is to hold off on the reading but look into recognizing the 100 "FRY" words that the kindergarten students need to be aware of. Once done those words are in beginning reading books and should help.

Emma is having surgery (for the third time) next Monday. She has had so many ear infections that she has lost hearing in her left ear. She signs over 200 words. Sorry that Jack has an ear infection. My suggestion would be to have him practice naming the letters with lots of different fonts. (A lot of the letters look different in books than on flash cards.) Also rhyming is the number one predictor of reading. Even if it is nonsense words, work on rhyming. You can also work on the sounds that each letter makes, and some letters make more than one sound. Colors, shapes, and puzzles are fun too. Don't push it while he is sick.
